What Winterization Isn't
Simply pulling your boat out of the water, washing it, changing the oil and
throwing a tarp over it will simply not work in this area where our seasons
actually change. Here in Pennsylvania the freezing temperatures must not be
ignored!
Even the wind blowing over an outboard that may still have water trapped inside
can freeze and cause internal damage along with corrosion.
Facts
Winterizing your boat is one of the most important maintenances performed.
Proper care now will ensure that you will be up and ready for the spring.
Winterizing and proper storage will extend the life of your boat.
Exterior
Make sure that your cover is properly supported. Allowing rain and snow to
collect can cause leakage into your boat. Any water in a boat during storage is
a bad idea.
Clean your boat as soon as you pull it.
Thoroughly check for any blistering in the gel coat. If you do discover problems
make note and call them to your marine service techs attention. In most cases
it's best to have them repaired before placing your boat in the water next
Spring.
Trailers are Important Too
Inspect for cracking and flaking paint. Repair to these areas soon will help
prevent rust.
Replace broken taillight lenses and blown bulbs.
Pull wheels and check wheel bearings
Check tires and replace if need be.
Interior
Be sure to remove all food and beverages. This will prevent freezing, bursting,
rodent or insect problems.
Leave doors, cabinets, and storage compartments open.
If your boat is equipped with head, remove it and clean it thoroughly.
Check emergency equipment. Don't forget to refill the first-aid box.
Remove all life preservers and gear from the boat and let them dry.
Remove electronics and store indoors if possible.
